Our Mission

At NorthBones, our mission is rooted in respect for heritage, legality, and sustainability. We are committed to:

  • Providing authentic, legally sourced ivory

  • Supporting Indigenous communities who harvest and carve ivory in accordance with traditional customs and U.S. law

  • Promoting education around ivory types, legal frameworks, and responsible collection practices

We believe that ivory, when sourced legally and ethically, can be appreciated for its cultural, historical, and artistic significance. Whether you’re a museum curator, jeweler, knife maker, scrimshaw artist, or collector, we are here to provide the materials and expertise you need—with full transparency and documentation.

Over 30 Years of Trusted Ivory Trade

Our journey began over three decades ago in Alaska—home to some of the richest Arctic traditions and materials in the world. Over the years, we’ve built strong relationships with Native Alaskan communities, Inuit carvers, and responsible fossil ivory traders. These relationships have allowed us to source and sell narwhal tusks, walrus ivory, and mammoth ivory with full compliance to U.S. federal and state laws.

We are proud to be recognized as one of the most reputable ivory dealers in North America, offering not just premium materials, but also deep knowledge of their origins, use, and legal trade requirements.

What We Offer

Narwhal Ivory

Sourced legally from Indigenous hunts in the Canadian Arctic and Greenland, narwhal tusks are among the rarest forms of ivory available. Their long, spiraled shape and historical mystique—once thought to be unicorn horns—make them highly desirable for both collectors and artisans.

Walrus Ivory

We carry both fresh (contemporary) and fossil walrus ivory, harvested and carved by Native Alaskan artists in accordance with the Marine Mammal Protection Act. This material is ideal for detailed carving, jewelry, inlays, and traditional Native art.

Mammoth Ivory

Legally excavated from permafrost regions in Alaska, Siberia, and Canada, mammoth ivory is tens of thousands of years old. As an extinct species, it is not restricted by modern conservation laws, making it one of the most accessible and legal forms of ivory for global trade. We offer raw mammoth tusk segments, polished pieces, and cross-sections for carving, collection, and display.

Legal Compliance and Ethical Sourcing

NorthBones is fully compliant with U.S. laws governing ivory trade, including:

  • Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA)

  • Endangered Species Act (ESA)

  • CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) regulations

We take our responsibility seriously and provide documentation, provenance, and guidance with every item sold. Our team stays up-to-date with state, federal, and international ivory regulations so that you can buy with confidence, knowing your purchase is both legal and ethical.
